IN SHORT

Many businesses think that posting as much as possible on Instagram is the key to growth. In reality the algorithm rewards engagement, and too many posts risk driving followers away. We look at the risks of a "more is more" strategy, the advantages of carefully crafted content and 15 tips for building an effective content strategy.

Topic of our service Social Media & Content

With more than a billion monthly active users, Instagram has established itself as one of the most powerful digital marketing tools for brands of every size and sector. However, growing competition on the platform has led many businesses to believe, wrongly, that posting as much content as possible is the key to increasing visibility and engagement. As marketing professionals, it’s our job to dispel this myth and guide clients towards a more effective Instagram strategy, one that focuses on quality rather than quantity.

The myth of quantity in an Instagram strategy

Many clients, driven by the anxiety of falling behind their competitors and the fear of not being present enough on Instagram, fall into the trap of wanting to fill their feed with content. The underlying idea is that the more posts there are, the greater the chances of reaching a wider audience and getting more interactions. However, as entrepreneur and social media guru Gary Vaynerchuk points out: “Content is king, but context is God. It’s not enough to create content; you have to create it in the right way, for the right people, at the right time.”

The risks of a “more is more” strategy:

Contrary to what you might think, bombarding your feed with content doesn’t automatically lead to more engagement or more followers. In fact, it can have the opposite effect. Jenn Herman, social media expert and author of “Instagram for Business”, puts it this way: “It’s not about posting as much content as possible, it’s about posting the right content. The content your audience wants to see and interact with.” Here’s why:

  1. The Instagram algorithm: As digital entrepreneur and marketing expert Neil Patel explains, “A common mistake I see brands make on Instagram is posting too often. This can actually hurt your engagement.” The Instagram algorithm tends to penalise accounts that post too frequently, reducing the organic reach of their posts. In other words, even if you post more, your content is shown to fewer people.
  2. The spam effect: Users may see an excess of posts as a form of spam, especially if the content isn’t particularly relevant or interesting. Sue B. Zimmerman, known as “The Instagram Expert”, warns: “Posting too often can actually drive your followers away. Instead of focusing on quantity, focus on creating authentic, valuable content that resonates with your audience.”
  3. Loss of quality: When you aim for quantity, you often end up neglecting the quality of your content. Rushed posts, poorly crafted or out of line with the brand’s identity, risk pushing followers away instead of attracting them. As Later, one of the most popular social media management platforms, points out: “Finding the right posting frequency is essential. Posting too often can overwhelm your followers, while posting too little can make them disengage. The key is to find a balance and stay consistent.”
  4. Overstimulation and disinterest: Too many posts risk overstimulating followers, who end up feeling bombarded and lose interest in the brand. As a study by Sprout Social highlights, 60% of users have unfollowed a brand because its content was too promotional or repetitive.

The strength of a targeted strategy:

Rather than aiming for quantity, it’s far more effective to develop a targeted, well-planned content marketing strategy focused on creating valuable content that entertains, informs or inspires your audience. As Joe Pulizzi, founder of the Content Marketing Institute, explains: “Content marketing is based on the belief that if we deliver valuable, relevant information to our prospects, they will ultimately reward us with their business and their loyalty.” Here are some of the advantages of this approach:

  1. More engagement: Quality content designed around followers’ needs and interests is more likely to get reactions, comments and shares. According to a study by Mention, the Instagram posts that generate the most engagement are those that tell a story, stir emotions and invite interaction.
  2. Greater loyalty: When a brand offers relevant, engaging content, followers develop a sense of affinity and trust towards it. As Mark Schaefer, author of “Marketing Rebellion”, explains: “The most loyal, passionate customers don’t want to be ‘targeted’. They want to be understood, appreciated and respected through personalised, authentic experiences.”
  3. Better reach: The Instagram algorithm rewards content that generates engagement by showing it to a wider audience. As Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, confirms: “What we do is try to work out what content matters to you and show it higher up in your feed. Engagement is one of the main signals we consider.”
  4. A stronger brand identity: A carefully curated content strategy lets you communicate the brand’s values, personality and positioning more consistently. As Krista Neher, author of “Visual Social Marketing For Dummies”, explains: “Brands that succeed on Instagram have a distinctive voice and personality. Their content is instantly recognisable and aligned with their overall message.”

How to develop an effective content strategy

Building a successful content marketing strategy on Instagram takes planning, creativity and a deep knowledge of your audience. Here are some essential steps to follow:

  1. Define your target audience: As social media expert Brian Peters explains, “The first step in creating successful content on Instagram is understanding who you’re creating it for. You need to know your audience, their interests, their challenges and what motivates them.” Tools such as polls in Instagram Stories or analysis of your followers’ demographics can help you build a clearer picture of your audience.
  2. Set clear goals: Erin Hiemstra, founder of Apartment34, stresses the importance of having a clear vision of what you want to achieve with your Instagram presence: “Whether it’s raising awareness, generating leads or driving sales, your goals need to be specific, measurable and aligned with your overall business strategy.”
  3. Develop an editorial plan: Planning content in advance helps you make sure it’s consistent with your overall strategy and spread evenly over time. As Jenn Herman suggests, “Create an editorial calendar that includes a mix of different content – informative posts, behind the scenes, user-generated content and so on – and make sure you post it when your audience is most active and receptive.”
  4. Focus on quality: Every piece of content should be crafted down to the smallest detail, from the choice of images to the copy, hashtags and calls to action. As Sue B. Zimmerman reminds us, “The quality of your photos and videos is essential on Instagram. Invest in decent equipment, learn the basics of composition and post-production, and make sure every element of your post is designed to catch attention and spark a reaction.”
  5. Tell stories: In an age when consumers are constantly bombarded with promotional messages, the best way to stand out is to tell authentic, engaging stories. As Mitch Joel, author of “Six Pixels of Separation”, explains, “Stories create connections. They let brands show their human side, share their values and build lasting relationships with their audience.”
  6. Work with influencers and creators: Collaborations with influencers and content creators can help you reach new audiences, increase brand credibility and generate authentic, engaging content. As Brittany Hennessy, author of “Influencer: Building Your Personal Brand in the Age of Social Media”, points out, “Successful collaborations are built on shared values and on creating content that is authentic for both the brand and the influencer.”
  7. Monitor and analyse results: Tracking the performance of your posts is essential to understand what works and what doesn’t, and to adjust your strategy where needed. As Sprout Social explains, “Analysing metrics such as engagement rate, reach, impressions and follower growth rate will help you identify your most successful content and optimise your strategy over time.”

So what should you do?
Standing out on Instagram takes a well-planned content marketing strategy focused on quality. As professionals in the field, it’s our job to guide clients beyond the myth of quantity, helping them understand that success on Instagram isn’t measured only by the number of posts or followers, but by the authentic, lasting relationships built with their audience.

By creating targeted, engaging and valuable content that tells authentic stories and responds to followers’ needs and interests, brands can stand out from the crowd and generate concrete results for their business. As Seth Godin, one of the most influential marketing experts, reminds us: “Marketing is no longer about the stuff that you make, but about the stories you tell.” And on Instagram, it’s quality stories that make the difference.
