Claude Cowork: what it is, how it works and how to use it for marketing

IN SHORT

Claude Cowork isn't a chatbot you ask questions. It's a workspace where the model knows your brand, your files and your instructions, and applies them every time. You can generate emails, analyses, articles and reports without starting from scratch in every session. For marketers, that means less time lost on setup and more usable output. This article explains how it works and how to set it up.

Topic of our service AI Solutions

If you’ve heard about Claude Cowork and still haven’t quite worked out what it is, you’re not the only one. Anthropic introduced this feature fairly quietly, without any big announcements, yet people who work in digital marketing every day have started using it and can no longer do without it.

Put simply: Claude Cowork turns Claude from a text assistant into a collaborator that works inside your actual workflow. It reads open documents, analyses what you’re working on, suggests, corrects, generates. All without you having to copy and paste anything.

This article explains what it actually does, how to set it up and why, for marketers, it’s a different kind of tool from the others.

What Claude Cowork is and what sets it apart from other AI tools

Claude is the artificial intelligence model developed by Anthropic, a company founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers. Claude Cowork is the collaborative working mode within the Claude ecosystem, available through the desktop app and some native integrations.

The difference compared with classic AI assistants lies in the context. While ChatGPT and other tools work well for single questions or isolated tasks, Claude Cowork is designed for extended working sessions in which the model keeps in mind the project, the uploaded files, the team’s editorial style and recurring instructions.

What it can actually do

  • Read PDF, Word and CSV files and reason about their content
  • Maintain a shared project context across several sessions (through Claude Projects)
  • Generate structured output: emails, articles, analyses, briefs, reports
  • Integrate with other tools through the Anthropic API and MCP connectors
  • Adapt tone and style based on uploaded brand documents
A note for anyone coming from ChatGPT
Claude isn't simply "another GPT". The model is trained with a different approach to safety and reliability (Constitutional AI), produces fewer hallucinations on long texts and handles documents with many pages better. The comparison should be made on real use cases, not technical specifications.

How it works: Projects, artifacts and persistent context

At the heart of Claude Cowork are Projects. These are workspaces where you can upload documents, define system instructions and keep all the context available in every conversation.

Claude Projects: what they are and how to set them up

A Project in Claude works like a smart folder. You upload the files you need (brand guidelines, product data, campaign history, email templates), write the instructions you want the model always to follow, and from then on every chat inside that project starts with all the context already active.

  1. Create a new Project from claude.ai/projects
  2. Upload the reference files (PDF, DOCX, TXT, CSV)
  3. Write the system instructions: tone, output format, constraints
  4. Invite team members if you work collaboratively
  5. Every conversation inside the project automatically inherits all the context

Artifacts: ready-to-use output

Claude generates artifacts, that is blocks of content separate from the chat text: complete emails, articles, scripts, tables, code, presentations. They can be edited directly in the interface and copied or exported in one click.

For content marketers, this changes the pace of work. You no longer work on drafts in separate documents: the artifact lives next to the conversation, updates with every iteration and keeps the version history.

Claude Cowork features at a glance
ProjectsWorkspaces with persistent memory, shared files and instructions
ArtifactsStructured output (emails, articles, code) editable inline
Long contextContext window of up to 200,000 tokens: it reads entire manuals
API & MCPCan be integrated with CRMs, CMSs and email platforms through connectors
Available modelsClaude Opus 4, Sonnet 4, Haiku 4 (different in cost/performance)

Claude vs ChatGPT: the differences that matter

Claude vs ChatGPT is the comparison most searched for by people deciding which tool to adopt. The honest answer is that it depends on the use. But there are structural differences worth knowing.

Claude (Anthropic)ChatGPT (OpenAI)
Context up to 200k tokensContext up to 128k tokens (GPT-4o)
Strong on long documents and analysisStrong on coding and general tasks
Constitutional AI: fewer hallucinations on textsExcellent integration with plugins and the GPT store
Projects with native persistent memoryMemory available but less structured
More cautious, verifiable toneMore creative, sometimes less accurate
API with competitive pricing on Sonnet/HaikuGPT-4o mini competitive on cost

For marketing work, Claude’s long context window is a concrete advantage: you can upload the entire product catalogue, the year’s campaign history and the brand guidelines in a single session. With GPT you have to split them up.

How to use Claude for marketing

Applying prompt engineering to Claude (if you haven’t read our article on how to build effective prompts, it’s a good place to start) means understanding how to instruct the model so that it produces usable output without too much post-editing.

That said, marketing has fairly specific use cases. Let’s look at them one by one.

Content marketing and SEO

Claude writes content well, provided the brief is precise. An article generated without specific instructions will be generic. With a Project containing the editorial guidelines, previous articles and target keywords, the result changes.

The approach that works:

  • Upload the style guidelines and 3-5 reference articles to the Project
  • Give instructions on structure: number of H2s, target length, keywords to include
  • Ask for a first draft, then iterate on tone and coverage of search intent
  • Use artifacts to keep versions separate without copying and pasting

Email marketing and automation

One of the most solid use cases for Claude at work in marketing is generating email flows. As we explored in our 2026 article on email marketing automation, Claude can generate the entire sequence of a funnel: welcome emails, nurturing, re-engagement, upsell. With tones tailored to each stage, alternative subject lines for A/B tests and personalised variants for each segment.

The real advantage: Claude doesn’t just write the emails. If you upload the performance data from the previous flow, it can identify the drop-off points and suggest targeted revisions.

Analysis and reporting

Upload a CSV with campaign data and ask Claude to interpret it. Not just calculations: the model identifies anomalies, explains trends in plain language and suggests hypotheses. Useful for preparing client presentations or briefs for the team.

Social media and advertising

Claude generates copy variants for Meta and Google ads with different frames (benefit, problem/solution, social proof, urgency). It also works well for writing LinkedIn posts in a professional tone and creating short video scripts.

Practical use cases: three real scenarios

Scenario A: the agency managing 10 clients

An agency with clients in different industries can create a Project for each client. Every project contains brand guidelines, campaign history and target keywords. Copy teams produce drafts 3x faster, with fewer tone errors, and the approval brief for the client is already included in the artifact.

Scenario B: the in-house marketing manager

Someone handling marketing for a single company uses Claude to prepare monthly reporting, generate the weekly newsletter, write job descriptions and research competitors. With a single Pro subscription and a few hours of initial setup, the time saved is measurable.

Scenario C: the freelancer working alone

The freelancer uses Claude as a second brain. They upload client briefs, run structured brainstorming, produce quick drafts and use the API to automate repetitive tasks. Production costs fall, capacity rises and quality holds up because post-editing remains human.

Watch out
Claude is a tool, not a substitute. Generated content must always be checked, edited and approved by a person. The added value of AI lies in speed and scale, not in removing human judgement.

Claude Cowork FAQ

Is Claude Cowork free?

Basic access to Claude is free with usage limits. The Pro and Team plans give access to the most powerful models (Opus, Sonnet), unlimited Projects and larger context windows. For professional use, the Pro plan starts at $20/month.

How can you use Claude for marketing without technical skills?

The claude.ai interface doesn’t require technical skills. Well-structured prompts and a minimum of initial Project setup are enough. For advanced integrations (API, automations) you need technical support or a partner such as Digital Runner.

Is Anthropic’s Claude safe for company data?

Anthropic offers advanced privacy options on business and API plans: data isn’t used to train the model. For regulated industries (healthcare, finance, legal), it’s advisable to consider the API option with specific agreements.

What’s the difference between Claude Projects and OpenAI’s custom GPTs?

Both let you create assistants with custom instructions and reference files. Claude Projects has larger context windows and handles long documents better. OpenAI’s custom GPTs have a more mature plugin ecosystem and a marketplace for distribution.
